Digital strategy is an organisational process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on where and how to allocate its resources to pursue its overall digital strategy.
Digital strategy is typically executed by strategic planners, digital strategists or digital agencies, who involve many parties and research sources in their analysis of the organisation and its relationship to the environment in which it competes.
Digital strategy has many definitions, but generally involves setting goals, determining actions to achieve the goals, and mobilising resources to execute the actions.
Digital strategy can be planned (intended) or can be observed as a pattern of activity (emergent) as the organisation adapts to its environment or competes.
The senior leadership of an organisation is generally tasked with determining strategy.
Digital strategy includes processes of formulation and implementation; strategic planning helps coordinate both. However, strategic planning is analytical in nature; the digital strategy formulation itself involves synthesis via strategic thinking.
As such, strategic planning occurs around the strategy formulation activity.
The digital strategy process may also extend to control mechanisms for guiding the implementation of the digital strategy.
